I wanted to let you know that we are updating the pricing for Userfront services this month. The updated pricing is available on our pricing page.

You will not be charged anything automatically, and your auth system's functionality will not be affected.

This blog post has details about why the pricing is changing, the timing of changes, and next steps.

We founded Userfront to remove auth complexity for projects of all sizes, and everyone on our team joined Userfront to build the best identity service in the world for millions of companies like yours.

Why

Our goals with the pricing change are:

1. We want to build the best identity product in the world.

We began as a young startup by setting our pricing based on Monthly Active Users (MAUs). As we have worked with more customers, we’ve learned that our investments in multi-tenancy, access control, security, and compliance can significantly reduce the burden that companies face. We want to continue improving these areas, and this pricing change helps us do that.

By moving away from MAU-based pricing, we can continue to focus on building great features instead of on the size of our customers. This means that we can continue to invest in building the features you care most about, regardless of how many MAUs you may have.

In other words: we can continue to build the best identity product in the world.

2. We want world-class authentication to be free.

We believe that our identity products are world-class, and we want our authentication features to remain free. That means passwords, passwordless, Single Sign-On, verification codes, MFA, and more. This pricing change allows us to more than double our free tier, from 10,000 to 25,000 monthly active users.

We see a lot of companies that start with off-the-shelf, framework-based authentication plugins that are free, but then run into all kinds of headaches a year later when they need features like proper multi-tenancy, RBAC, security, compliance, and auditing. These companies end up spending a huge amount of resources on patching their identity stack, which is a shame.

Because companies need full-featured authentication early but can wait for more advanced needs, we believe that free authentication is a big part of bringing the best identity product in the world to millions of companies.

Timing

For new accounts created after September 14, 2023, the new pricing is immediately in effect.

For existing accounts, we are working directly with customers to find the right tier for each account by October 31, 2023.

Next steps

I want to reiterate that you will not be charged anything automatically, and your current auth system's functionality will not be affected by this change.

If you are an existing customer, we will reach out to you directly by email to find the right plan for you and to hear about your needs.

Thank you for reading and for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Best,

Tyler Warnock, cofounder
